Third, the lugs seem to get thicker/deeper as they reach their blocky terminus, something I’ve not seen before but to me conveys ruggedness and durability (I don’t know why). Then, the curved shape does indeed help it wear very comfortably. Obviously, the big crown, which is no problem to operate. The CaseĪ few things stand out when viewing the Sector case profile. What stands out at a glance is the sharp edges and the contrasting blasted/satin and polished finishing, as well as the double radial gradient dial with a raised central disc. But what stands out? Here’s the good and the not so good.įirst impressions, unsurprisingly, are good of the Nodus Sector Field, here in Sequoia green. The Sector Field is no exception to Nodus’ high standards. As we’ve come to expect, Nodus gave us a few new things and did well the things we’re familiar with. Originally released as a diver, the family has expanded to include the Field, the Pilot, and the Sport. Their latest model line–though it may not be by the time you read this–is the Sector. (Nodus is known as much for their quality as they are for how prolific they are). Since our last review in 2019, the brand has released two brand new models and two revamps of prior models for a total of 6 model lines in 3 years. We’ve reviewed three of their watches on the site: the debut Trieste, the Retrospect, and the Avalon. It’s also not unfair to say that they produce some of the highest-quality, best value timepieces in the microbrand space–and perhaps beyond. It’s not unfair to say they are one of the watch world’s microbrand darlings. Think of it as a photo review, if you’d like. There will still be a bit of the normal stuff, but the presentation and focus will be shifted. I’ll wrap up with my impressions of the watch as a whole (since I won’t spend much time on specs, a table at the end of the review will tell you everything you need to know). Here, after a brief introduction, I’ll be focusing on the highs and lows of the watch with photos and photo commentary. Typically my reviews blend in an unending stream of paragraphs describing the watch, citing the specs, and opining on its merits (or demerits). With so many of us turning away from the giants in favour of the passion and quality that exudes from the smaller brands the Avalon II is destined to be a big success and will serve you well as a daily beater or a dedicated deep-sea companion.I’m going to try something new here. What the Avalon II offers, which none of the others do, is the opportunity to flash a new and upcoming Microbrand which is gaining a lot of traction. At this price you are right in Seiko Prospex territory yet above the venerable Citizen Dive range and a long way under the big Swiss brands. This is a very capable product and offers the design flair we've come to expect from Nodus. So how does the watch stack up at the £625 price? Well to be honest. Considering the watch is designed in Los Angeles, it actually gives the case a very British feel. Certainly not what one would expect to find on the back of a dive watch, and it makes a pleasant change from the ubiquitous 'fish'. It's a good symbol to represent strength and adventure. Perfect if you are using the watch in a hot environment or want to slip it over a wetsuit. The new steel bracelet benefits from an upgrade with Nodus' NodeX extension clasp which allows for micro-adjustment in an instant. The textured dial (more on this later) and bold hands draw the eye to the centre and the combination of this and the case shape creates an optical illusion that the watch is no more than 41mm on the wrist. When first handled it seems like a big watch, but the sweeping curved sides of the case seem to hug your wrist. However, the new case feels like it has been crafted rather than machined and the attention to detail really shines through. The 300m Avalon II is a large 43.5mm diver in the same style case as the original model. In a recent meeting with the US founders, their zest for new designs and excitement over their creations was infectious so we are really thrilled at WatchGecko to have such a close working relationship and offer Nodus watches exclusively in the UK. Nodus are a small US-based microbrand, and we have noticed that the maturing of their products is a characteristic which can be seen across the entire portfolio.
